This article is about the Asphalt 8 special event. For the Asphalt Xtreme event, see Limited-Time Event (Asphalt Xtreme).

A Championship is a series of unlocking events in Asphalt 8: Airborne introduced in the Championship Update. While its basic premise is similar to Research & Development and Enduro Double Down, Championship is instead based on Formula One racing, with Time Attack races, Elimination races, and Grand Finales. Prior to the Munich Update, the only brands involved were McLaren and Porsche. As of the Munich Update, a manufacturer-neutral Championship interface exists to allow for more vehicles to use this type of event (represented by an "Arrow" Symbol). In the Hot Wheels Update, another interface was added, exclusive for Hot Wheels Championships.

Game Elements[]

Race Trophies and Goals

Similar to Quality Checks in R&D, in Championship you have to collect Race Trophies. Each Qualifier has three Goals, that equals one Race Trophy, a Main Goal, and two Secondary Goals (Second and Third Goal). In order to obtain the Race Trophy from a Secondary Goal, you have to fulfill the Main Goal as well. The third Goal is only available, if you have fulfilled the second Goal. The Goals can be skipped by paying , however, Goals are skipped one-by-one (in contrast to the R&D's Auto-Test function, which automatically skips a test and is priced based on how many Quality Checks the player has obtained in the test).

Trophies award Credits, Tokens, and Championship Boxes, which grant cards usable for the car being involved. Starting from the Porsche Update, Championships also award Blueprints for the car being involved if the car is Blueprint-buildable, but to get all, the player must get at least 110 Trophies and finish all 8 Grand Finales.

Tours

The Championship is divided into a number of Tours (usually 8), which feature between 3 and 7 races, the last race being called Grand Finale. In order to access the Grand Finale, all the Main Goals of a Location have to be achieved. Locations become available over time, and don't need the Main Goals of the previous Locations to be fulfilled.

Unlike with R&D or EDD, you can participate in races once you have finished the Grand Finale of the Location. Still, in order to terminate the whole Championship, you need to successfully complete all Grand Finales, but not necessarily collect all the Race Trophies. However, if you miss some Race Trophies, you will not earn all Rewards, which is why it's best to play unfinished Qualifiers to earn more Trophies.

Championships involving blueprint-buildable vehicles have the added requirement of collecting 110 Trophies in order to get all the Blueprints for the car. The last half of the required Blueprints is obtained when all 8 Grand Finales are completed.

Tires

In order to participate in a race in a Championship, Tires are required, similar to the Proto Keys in R&D. Tires are only refilled, once all tires are exhausted, it takes 8 hours (12 during Arrinera Hussarya GT's, Vanda Electrics Dendrobium's, Kawasaki Ninja H2R's, 2018 McLaren X2's and Porsche Carrera GT's Championship; 11 during the Hot Wheels Championships; 15 for the SCG 003S') to refill all 5 Tires. (From the Asphalt 9 Championship onwards, including any Championship re-runs, tire refills begin when the first tire has been used.) Up to Tokens 176 can be spent to refill Tires. There is an option to watch a video to gain a free Tire, and this can be used usually up to three (originally two) times every 24 hours.

Time Attack and Grand Finale

The Championship introduced also two new race modes: Time Attack and Grand Finale. In Auto-start/Time Attack, the player is dropped into the middle of a race and has to take over the wheel at some point to reach the end of the track in time; in the Grand Finale, the player needs to make the rev needle land in a green or blue zone in order to get a good start; the race otherwise becomes a 2-lap Classic race. This feature is similar to the starting mechanism in drag racing games, such as the CSR Racing series and Asphalt's own Asphalt Street Storm Racing.

Upgrades

The McLaren Championship-unlockable cars have 10 Pro Kit levels in place of the MAX Upgrades and 5 Pro Kit levels that all other cars usually have. Depending on the class of the car, the engine required may either be a Serial Racing Engine or a Custom Racing Engine. The Ariel Atom V8 also follows this rule, but uses the V8 Engine used in other cars.

The Porsche Championship-unlockable cars are like normal cars: with 5 MAX Upgrade levels and 5 Pro Kit levels. For Porsche cars, the engine may either be a High-Grade Engine or Exceptional Engine. Championships for other makes follow the Porsche Championship upgrade rules (including 10 MAX Upgrade levels for motorcycles, except for Kawasaki Ninja H2R), but can use any type of engine. Hot Wheels cars require the Hot Wheels Engine.

Leaderboard

In the McLaren Championship, the leaderboard determines the player's team's current standing. Completing Qualifiers and Grand Finales increases the player's team's standing and pushes them closer towards 1st place. When all Grand Finales are completed, the player's team is in 1st place.

Completion
Porsche Championship completed

To complete a Championship, complete all 8 Grand Finales. Upon doing so, the car is rewarded. In the case of the Porsche Championship, the last set of Blueprints is rewarded, allowing the player to assemble the car.

Although the Championship's Grand Finales are now completed, the player can still choose to go back and finish qualifiers for additional trophies and prizes. The player's Hall of Fame is decorated with a Championship section, indicating which Championships the player has completed, along with the number of trophies (upon completing the last Grand Finale) for each completed Championship. If the player has collected all 342 trophies for that Championship, the tab showing the completed Championship is shown with a golden trophy.

Bugs[]

On iOS, as soon as the tires are restocked, no races can be started and the following error message is shown:

An error has occurred. (Error 3000x/3100x)

The only solution is to close and reboot the game.

This error can also occur on other platforms, usually due to a poor Internet connection.

In the Porsche Update, a new bug was introduced where the Porsche Championship is sometimes replaced with the McLaren M14A Championship.

In the Hot Wheels update, for players on Windows, the Renault Trezor's Championship accidentally started two weeks early, on the 18th of January. If the first qualifier was played and won, the Championship would immediately close.

Trivia[]

  • The sound effect that is played upon collecting a reward in Championship was earlier used in R&D.
  • Unlike R&D and EDD, all Championship races have no traffic except for the fixed, stationary traffic in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro (Ipanema Showdown & Rapido Park).
  • The Car Blueprints Update updates the text that determines how many trophies are needed until the next reward with "Trophy(ies)".
  • The Porsche Update updates the prize list to show the number of Grand Finales completed to win the final prize.
  • The Munich Update updates location unlock screens to now show the featured vehicle's BP progress.
