According to the in-game database, the AI racers are actually ranked higher than what the game shows (except at the first Mastery Challenge). Because of this, in the later Mastery Challenges, the player must not make mistakes in order to finish first.

Introduced in the Car Mastery Update, Car Mastery (or just Mastery) is another single player game mode of Asphalt 8: Airborne. It offers 15 single-lap races with traffic, called Challenges, for each car of the game, with the possibility to earn Credits, Tokens, Car Upgrades, Pro Boxes, Boosters, and Licenses Licenses. This mode is only available for players with at least 135 stars in the Career Mode.

Challenge selection Screen: Challenge 6 was completed and claimed, Challenge 7 is not claimed, Challenge 8 is ready to be played, Challenge 9 and 10 are still locked.

For each car in the game there are 15 Mastery Challenges available. These races increase in difficulty: the ranks of the cars of NPC opponents will gradually increase from the initial car rank for Challenge 1 to MAX+PRO rank for Challenge 15. To be able to accept a certain Challenge, i.e. take part in the race, each previous Challenge must have been completed. Each Challenge also requires the car to have a certain rank; challenges 1 and 2 being available without upgrades, and increasing until Challenge 15, which requires a maxed and pro'ed car with the exception of some elite cars like the Mazda RX-8 (some low and mid end D Class cars and some low end C Class cars like the Ford Focus RS do not require a fully pro'ed vehicle for their final challenge).

Challenges are races either one of these types: Classic, Unplugged, or Flawless. All of these race modes require a first place finish in order to be successfully completed. The Unplugged and Flawless modes, however, come with a twist: in an Unplugged race no nitro bottles appear on the track, whilst in the Flawless mode, the player is not allowed to wreck their car. A wrecked car results in immediate disqualification and the race ending with no credits awarded.

According to the in-game database, the AI racers are actually ranked higher than what the game shows (except at the first Mastery Challenge). For example, a Mastery Challenge with a required rank of 1725 actually has the AI racers ranked at 1777, despite the game saying otherwise. Because of this, in the later Mastery Challenges, the player must not make mistakes in order to finish first.

Licenses

Car mastery exclusive rewards

Licenses Licenses, also sometimes called Mastery Points, are permanent collectable items which work as an experience level, similar to the star system, which you cannot buy but only earn. However instead of giving you access to new levels, the Licenses give you access to various rewards such as new Decal packs, and cars exclusively available through Licenses: Camaro Z/28 (Licenses 300),  Datsun 280Z (Licenses 650), Shelby Cobra 427 (Licenses 1,050) and Cadillac 16 Concept (Licenses 1,600). See the detailed rewards on the page Car Mastery Rewards.

Licenses are represented as a rectangular blue icon with a beige steering wheel on it.

Farming

The Mastery mode is interesting for farming in the classical sense once you have mastered your Class S or Class A car:

The 15th Mastery Challenge for the Lamborghini Veneno and the McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 in Alps pays Credits 5,845 - 5,895 for less than a minute of driving (versus the Veneno's Season 9 race which takes at least 01:30:000 and pays Credits 4,725) or the McLaren P1™ 15th challenge in Temple Drive which pays Credits 5,915.

But not all pro'ed cars are suitable for farming, for instance for the Mercedes-Benz Silver Lightning in Tokyo gives Credits 5,925, but because Tokyo is a long track and the race type is Unplugged, the credits per second are not very high. Also the opponents are at the same car upgrade level, you risk to not finish first if you crash. It has been established since the McLaren 675LT was introduced, its Challenge 15 race is the most efficient farming race to date for the game rewarding just over Credits 6,085, at Dubai Reverse in approximately 48 seconds for a clean run. In fact, by using a known shortcut on the track, the race win is virtually guaranteed as AI racers do not take the shortcut giving drivers a huge lead advantage. The Lykan Hypersport also has a similar earning rate on the same track on Challenge 15. With the introduction of the McLaren MP4-31 in the Car Blueprints Update, whose Mastery Challenge 15 is a Flawless race in Dubai that earns Credits 6,400 on average per lap, the MP4-31 is now the most efficient farming race, except that this race is only for advanced drivers (those with enough Custom Racing Engine cards).

In some cases, the 14th Mastery Challenge can still also be used as a farming race. Examples include the W Motors Fenyr Supersport (Rapido Park, Classic) and Lamborghini Egoista (Alps, Flawless).

CAUTION: the numbers given in the following paragraph were based on Rewards prior to the Research & Development Update. It has been confirmed that the Race Rewards and the Challenge Rewards were reduced, but it is unclear by how much. The current total might be closer to Credits 3,000,000 plus Credits 8,000,000.

However in a less strict sense of the term, it is possible to earn a lot of credits while playing, independent of the car's level: among all races of all cars, the total of Race Rewards are estimated to Credits 4,500,000, the medals reward around Credits 400,000, and the Challenge Rewards close to Credits 12,000,000, not counting the value of the Pro Boxes, Boosters or car upgrades. However these credits can only be obtained if the necessary cars are owned.

Players with VIP Levels 3 or higher receive extra Credits bonuses per race.

Challenge Rewards

The following section is outdated. Please update it with newer information.

For each race you play in the Mastery mode, you get a number of rewards. Similar to events, you can cash in those rewards after the race, or you can decide to leave them for later.

For each Challenge you get a Credits reward, and for Challenge 5, 6 (mostly), 10 and 15 you get an additional reward. The rare rewards of Free Upgrades, Extra Tanks, Pro Kit Boxes, Tokens and Double Credits, can be obtained in the following challenges:

Trivia

  • The graphic language of the Car Mastery is new to the game. While the car overview has a close resemblance to that of Season 9: Beyond, the Challenge selection screen, the Challenge loading screen and the Challenge completion / fail screen have graphic elements and colors which are new to the game. See the gallery below for examples.
  • On the iOS version of the game, there was a glitch in the pre-race cut-scene which is visible sometimes, it shows the name of the car in a distorted layer. It seems this was supposed to look like the end screen but hasn't been finished in time for the release. This has since been fixed.
  • After the Research & Development Update, many Car Mastery Rewards were reduced. See the Research & Development Update page for detailed information.
  • When collecting the Racer Kit Box from Challenge 5 for the Ferrari F430, it displays the image of a Random Box without a number, and the name is glitched. As soon as you collect the box from the challenge, it morphs into a Random Box 4. This may be due to the fact that the Racer Kit Box has been removed from the game, but Gameloft neglected to update the rewards for Challenge 5 to give a Random Box 4
