The McMurtry Spéirling (Irish for "thunderstorm") is a tiny single-seated prototype electric car developed by McMurtry Automotive, a British registered startup founded on June 2, 2016, by Sir David McMurtry.
Description[]
According to McMurtry, the motivation behind the car was to challenge the industry trend of increasingly heavier vehicles and, by using first principles design, create a lightweight electric drivers car. The prototype car is the first step to demonstrate what customers will experience on road and track. It is not currently in a racing series but is built to satisfy relevant motorsport safety requirements, with crash structures and a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis with integral rollover protection. Its unique performance differentiator is the fan powered downforce system, giving 2,000 kg of downforce from 0 mph.
The car was first presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 8–11 July 2021, and driven by Derek Bell. The car had been developed in secrecy over three years.
On 26 June 2022, the Spéirling achieved a new Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb record, completing the 1.87-kilometre (1.16 mi) course in 39.08 seconds with McMurtry test driver Max Chilton behind the wheel.
In December 2022, it set the following times verified by independent GPS timing without rollout by Mat Watson from carwow on Silverstone:
- 0-60 mph in 1.40s
- 0-100 mph in 2.63s
- 0-145 mph in 4.98s
- ¼ mile (400m) in 7.97s
When considering the 1/4 mile time, it's worth noting that the car was electronically limited to a 150 mph top speed for roughly the last 3 seconds of the run. The car also ran on bespoke drag slicks and was not a production car model.
Asphalt Legends Unite (formerly Asphalt 9: Legends)[]
The McMurtry Spéirling was added in the Supercharged Summer Update as a low class A car with following statics:
- Stock rank: 2,603 (
50)
rank: 2,741
rank: 2,930 (
23)
rank: 3,151 (
27)
rank: 3,460 (
36)
rank: 3,789 (
51)
Performance[]
At stock, the McMurtry Spéirling is an inferior version of the Peugeot 9X8, with a slower top speed, worse handling and nitro but better acceleration. Its acceleration, in fact, is the highest at stock (86.50), as well as MAX (90.52). Surpassing the 9X8 in terms of acceleration, it was the fastest accelerating car in the game before the RAESR Tartarus was introduced. while its top speed still remains very low. This is compensated with great handling and nitro efficiency, and it is almost similar to the Vanda Electrics Dendrobium, with slightly higher acceleration and worse handling and nitro. While not being the best in its class, it can be useful in multiplayer once it has enough star upgrades.
Usage[]
While not tested yet, it's clear that the McMurtry Spéirling will perform better on technical tracks, whereas on speed-oriented tracks its very low top speed is a disadvantage against faster cars, or even for the Vanda due to its better nitro and perfect nitro boost.
Availability[]
The car was initially available in its Unleashed event.
It later made available in its Special Event that was available between January 5 – 17, 2025. Up to 73 and 9x epic import parts could be obtained by completing all stages (except the final stage) and claiming all progression rewards.
