Play is a minimalistic sans serif typeface designed by Jonas Hecksher during his time as Type Director of Playtype Type Foundry. “All letters in Play derive from the 'O'—square and circular at the same time. Play is designed with large, open counters, ample lowercase x-heights and a corporate, yet friendly appearance. The combination of these qualities give Play both a high legibility and readability.” [1]
Usage[]
Play is the main and only font of Asphalt Street Storm Racing. It also has a Cyrillic character subset, so the Russian game version can use the same font without changes to the general "look and feel".
Versions[]
Asphalt Streetstorm uses the old version 1.002 of the font which is still available on Font Squirrel.
While the new version 2.101 on Google Fonts shows no major differences for the Latin subset, the Cyrillic (and the Greek) characters have been overhauled and are no longer like in-game.
Cyrillic:
- The Russian letter К (K) traditionally has an extra bow in the upper half which is repeated in the letter Ж (ZH) and can be seen in the ПОДДЕРЖКА (CUSTOMER CARE) button. The new version has eliminated the bows.
- The Russian lower case ф (f) normally looks like two o's sticked to a vertical bar. The new version is more like the Greek capital Φ (phi) which resembles a struck out o.
Greek:
- The old version lacks a character for the lower case word-final ς (sigma). It has been added in the new version.
- Although the old version contains definitions for Κ (kappa), it displays the Cyrillic letter К (with extra bow) when typing a Greek text. This has been fixed in the new version.
Players who want to recreate original in-game texts or prefer the more traditional Cyrillic characters may therefore want to install the old version 1.002. For other uses, the new version 2.101 may be the better choice because of the fixed issues.

Asphalt Wiki[]
Play (version 1.002) can also be used on Asphalt Wiki. As it is rendered smaller than standard text, it is set to a font size of 107 % by default so that upper case letters have the same height as standard text. Rendering text bigger than normal requires font sizes larger than 107 %.
